Humanists International’s Director of Advocacy, Elizabeth O‘Casey, has been elected as President of the United Nations NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) in Geneva.

Her election followed a vote by Committee members (who are all NGO representatives) during a meeting at the 50th Session of the UN Human Rights Council last week.

The UN NGO Committee on FoRB exists to support and coordinate NGO activities at the UN in Geneva relating to promoting the right to FoRB and its intersection with other rights.

In cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Committee supports the mandate and work of the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, and facilitates links between the mandate, civil society and other stakeholders.

Also elected to the bureau of the Committee was Wissam al-Saliby as Vice President (on behalf of the World Evangelical Alliance) and Michelle Mack Fiore as Secretary (on behalf of Jus Cogens).

The NGO Committee is a sub-committee of the CONGO Special Committee on Human Rights.
