IHEU is making available US$8,000 annually to sponsor the school fees of 100 needy pupils in Mayflower Junior School, in Nigeria. Established by the famous Nigerian humanist Tai Solarin, Mayflower is Nigeria’s best known school – IHEU leaders like Lloyd and Mary Morain supported the school right from its inception 50 years ago (see IHN February 2003).
The scholarship scheme will be publicised by IHEU’s member organisation the Nigerian Humanist Movement through its newsletters and publicity campaigns. Mayflower school is currently modifying its syllabus to integrate lessons on humanist values into the Social Studies curriculum of primaries 1 to 3, while voluntary humanist classes for primaries 4 to 6 are to begin soon.
The primary basis of selection of pupils will be need, and no child will be turned away simply on the basis of the religion of its parents.
