IHEU member organization Libre Pensée has condemned the decision of the Council of Europe to reject Guy Langagne’s report on the dangers of creationism in education, and has demanded that the report be placed on the agenda for the next meeting of the Council’s parliamentary assembly.

translation of the original French statement

Charged by the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe with writing a report on “the dangers of creationism in education”, Mr. Guy Langagne was not allowed to present his work to the assembly, in spite of its prior approval by the Commission on culture, science and education. Discussion was delayed sine die.

The French National Federation of Freethinkers (La Fédération Nationale de la Libre Pensée) condemns this decision, amounting to an intolerable act of censorship imposed by religious pressure groups of all kinds at a political assembly. There are those who would like a return to ignorance to be made part of official dogma, but the living world was not created from nothing in seven days. It is the product of evolution, for which Charles Darwin found the evidence, in the footsteps of the great 18th century men of science, notably Lamarck and Linné.

The National Federation of the Freethinking demands that Mr. Langagne’s report be restored to the agenda of the plenary session of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe, which is due to meet next October.
