Some of the best and brightest Humanist minds will explore “The Meaning of Life” over the weekend of June 17 to 19, as part of the British Humanist Association 2011 conference.

Contributors to the conference conversation include some of Britain’s pre-eminent philosophers, scientists, authors and journalists, including: Peter Atkins, Julian Baggini, Chris French, Natalie Haynes, Stephen Law, Richard Norman, Phillip Pullman, and Mark Vernon. In her valedictory appearance as president of the BHA, Polly Toynbee will discuss the meaning of it all with her successor,  A.C.Grayling. Entertainment on the Friday night features comedian Robin Ince and “Egghead” C J De Mooi. A gala dinner on the Saturday evening will include the presentation of an award for services to Humanism.

The conference will run from the evening of Friday 17 June to midday on Sunday 19 June at the landmark Hilton Deansgate in Manchester. As the British Humanist Association’s first national conference in several years, the event will provide a rare opportunity to meet fellow Humanists from across the country.

The programme will be accessible to all levels of interest. Participants will join with scientists and writers, philosophers and entertainers as they wrangle with such subjects as boundlessly optimistic science, the meanings in our lives, bizarre beliefs and cognitive deficiencies, classical wisdom, secular narrative, and, improbably, the virtues of religion!
