In the aftermath of the 13 November Paris terror attacks, the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) wrote to President Hollande. The open letter from the week after the attacks is now published in full below, in English and in French. (You can also read our public statement on the attacks.)
Dear Mr President,
I write to you on behalf of the International Humanist and Ethical Union, the representative body for Humanists throughout the world. We extend deep-felt condolences for all those who were murdered or injured in the attacks which took place in Paris last Friday.
Like so many others, we were shocked and outraged by these senseless acts of barbarism, and by the cowardice of the perpetrators in particularly targeting defenceless young people at a concert and in restaurants.
France has a long and proud history of laïcité, and this fierce commitment to the separation of church and State, coupled with an unbending dedication to the principles of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity upon which the French Republic was built, encourages and inspires countless people throughout the world. France has a global leadership role and a responsibility to act ethically and rationally in response to last Friday’s atrocities, protecting Muslim minorities in France from any backlash as well as leading international efforts to defeat the Islamic State.
As Humanists, we will continue to work globally and across communities to promote the values of humanity and hope over hatred and fear.

Monsieur le Président de la République,
Je vous adresse cette lettre au nom du International Humanist and Ethical Union, l’organe représentant les humanistes à travers le monde. Nous souhaitons exprimer nos condoléances sincères et attristées pour tous ceux qui ont été assassinés ou blessés lors des attaques qui ont eu lieu vendredi dernier à Paris.
Comme tant d’autres, nous avons été choqués et indignés par ces actes de barbarie, et également par la lâcheté des auteurs en ciblant particulièrement les jeunes dans ces lieux de vie.
La France a une longue et fière histoire au sujet de la laïcité, et cet engagement féroce pour la séparation de l’Église et de l’État, couplé à un dévouement inébranlable quant aux principes de liberté, d’égalité et de fraternité sur lequel la République française s’est construite, encourage et inspire aujourd’hui d’innombrables personnes à travers le monde. La France a un rôle de leadership mondial et la responsabilité d’agir éthiquement et avec raison face aux atrocités de vendredi dernier, en protégeant les minorités musulmanes en France de toute répercussion tout en dirigeant les efforts internationaux de lutte contre l’État Islamique, est primordiale.
En tant qu’humanistes, nous continuerons de travailler à l’échelle mondiale et par le biais des communautés afin de promouvoir les valeurs de l’humanité et d’espoir au-delà de la haine et de la peur.
