The IHEU is pleased to announce the launch of Café Humaniste, a new initiative that aims to promote Humanism in locations around the world.

The pilot event on the topic “What we talk about when we talk about vaccination” will take place in Milan (Italy) the 16 June, co-organized with the Circle of Milan of the Union of Rationalist Atheists and Agnostics, Unione degli Atei e degli Agnostici Razionalisti (UAAR).

Café Humaniste is an event series bringing people together to discuss questions of interest and concern to humanists, wherever they are from. The events will be organized in collaboration with local IHEU Member Organizations in countries all over the world, with the IHEU providing financial and media support.

IHEU Member Organizations are encouraged to find more details on how to get involved in Café Humaniste via the dedicated page on our website.

IHEU will be virtually present in Milan with an introductory video message from Giovanni Gaetani, IHEU Growth and Development Officer. Announcing the very first event of a hopefully long series, Giovanni said:

“These are exciting times for the IHEU and for Humanism worldwide. Three weeks ago we successfully launched of our new Latin American project, ¿Qué pasa Humanista?, which was extremely well-received, and a second ¿Qué pasa Humanista? will be held again soon.

“Today, I am extremely happy to announce the beginning of this new event series, Café Humaniste. Together with our friends at UAAR we worked to organize the pilot event on this timely and truly important subject.

“As a whole our hope is that this series of events will bring together humanists in many parts of the world, overcoming linguistic, cultural, and geographical barriers, to discuss topics of international importance in a spirit of reason and free enquiry.”

The pilot event will take place the 16 June in Milan (Italy) and has been co-organized by the IHEU and the UAAR circle of Milan. The theme of this very first Café Humaniste is: “What we talk about when we talk about vaccination”, a topic “of global scale and concern”, as confirmed by UAAR Secretary, Stefano Incani: “It is an extremely important and topical theme, considering what is happening in these months, in Italy in particular. This theme needs clarity, which can be obtained only through science. I hope then that this event will help to debunk all myths and fake news spreading on internet, confirming the concept that only scientific competences matter in the end”.

For example, according to one of the most notorious American critics of vaccinations, US President Trump is going to announce soon a “vaccine safety and scientific integrity” commission. In Italy the government has just approved a law that makes mandatory 12 specific vaccines. Under the new law parents are required to vaccinate their children before enrolling them in nursery school, with those refusing to comply subject to fines, while two famous “anti-vaxxer” doctors in Italy have recently been disbarred and struck off from the register of doctors.

Coming soon to Milan

The first speaker for the event is Roberto Burioni, Professor of Microbiology and Virology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, who is well-known in Italy for his activism against “fake news” and conspiracy theories on vaccines. Professor Burioni will appear in a short video message to stress the importance of a rational and scientific debate on such delicate health and social issues, arguing that: “These are hard times for those who want to use reason. Truth has the same value of lie today. On the internet people who have studied for 5 minutes on Google pretend to have the same credibility as specialists that have spent their whole life studying the same subject. This is a drift that we cannot accept”.

The second speaker will be Silvia Mari, Professor of Social Psychology  at the University of Milano-Bicocca. From her perspective, Professor Mari will shed light on the psychological and social dynamics involved in the spread of fake news. The title of her speech will be: “Scientific disinformation and conspiracy theories in the social media era”.

The third and last speaker will be Nicasio Mancini who teaches Microbiology and Virology, also at Vita-Salute San Raffaele. Prof. Mancini will analyse vaccination from a scientific and medical point view, trying to show “Why vaccination is not an opinion” – a tribute to Roberto Burioni’s book.

The event will be moderated by Alessandra Vitullo, sociologist and journalist for Reset DOC. After the speeches, Alessandra will leave room for comments and questions coming from the public. The main idea behind the Café Humaniste format is indeed to let people share and discuss the most different humanist themes in an informal and friendly way.

On the same line the IHEU is already organizing the next Café Humaniste in Guatemala City (Guatemala) in collaboration with the AGHS. The event will be officially announced in the next weeks, but for moment we can give you a little spoiler on the theme, which will be: “Mentalismo y creencias” (Mentalism and beliefs).

The first Café Humaniste will be held 16 June, from 6.30 pm on, at the Casa delle Associazioni e del Volontariato, via Marsala 8, Milan. If you cannot attend, click “Interested” on the Facebook Event and you will be notified when we post subtitled video and photos from the event.

Prossimamente a Milano
