Last week, the Polish Constitutional Court ruled that abortions due to severe and irreversible foetal defects, which make up a majority of all legal terminations in Poland, are unconstitutional. This means that abortions will now only be allowed in cases of rape, incest, or where the mother’s life is at risk.
Last year, Humanists International made a statement at the OSCE in Warsaw calling on Poland to step-up on women’s rights, denouncing how the rise of religious conservatism in the country has undermined a number of the gains for which women have fought over the decades. The latest ruling on abortion constitutes a further worsening of women’s rights in Poland.
Following the example of the Norwegian Humanist Association, Humanists International calls on humanists from all around the world to show their support to women in Poland by sharing photos on social media with the hashtag #WeStandWithPolishWomen – you can download and print the sign from here.
