Pineda, a prominent figure in the Latin American humanist movement and founder of Humanistas Guatemala, was first elected to the Board in 2016. Over his decade-long tenure, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening the ties between the global organization and the growing secular communities across Central and South America.
Standing down for personal reasons, Pineda leaves behind a significant legacy of advocacy. During his time on the Board, he was instrumental in elevating the visibility of humanist activists in the Global South, drawing on his expertise as an entrepreneur and engineer to foster organizational growth and international solidarity.

Maggie Ardiente, President of Humanists International, paid tribute to his years of service:
“David has been a tireless advocate for humanist values and a vital voice on our Board for ten years. His dedication to building a more rational and compassionate world, particularly through his pioneering work in Guatemala, has inspired us all. While we are sad to see him leave the Board, we are profoundly grateful for the passion and perspective he brought to our global leadership.”
Gary McLelland, Chief Executive of Humanists International, highlighted Pineda’s impact on the organization’s mission:
“Working alongside David has been a privilege. He has always been a champion for the ‘lived experience’ of activists, ensuring that the voices of genuine humanist organizations in regions like Guatemala are showcased on the international stage. His commitment to the movement remains an example to us all, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with him in his future endeavors.”
Reflecting on his departure, David Pineda emphasized his continued commitment to the cause:
“It has been an incredible honor to serve on the Board of Humanists International since 2016. While I am stepping down for personal reasons, my heart remains firmly with the movement. I intend to stay deeply involved with humanist work both in Guatemala and on the international stage. I am already looking forward to reuniting with my colleagues and friends from around the world at the World Humanist Congress in Ottawa this August.”
