Celebrating positive change around the world this World Humanist Day

World Humanist Day is celebrated every year on June 21st. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness of humanism as a philosophical life stance and its potential to help create a better, more compassionate world.

World Humanist Day originated in the 1980s, when it was first observed by several local state chapters of the American Humanist Association (AHA). Over time, it has developed into a global celebration embraced by humanist organizations and communities worldwide. It offers an opportunity for humanists to share the positive values of humanism and celebrate our growing international movement.

June 21st typically coincides with the June solstice, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the shortest in the southern hemisphere. The date was chosen because the solstice has long been associated with communal gatherings across cultures and reflects a humanistic appreciation of the natural world.

To celebrate World Humanist Day here are some recent positive developments in the international humanist movement:

Northern Ireland

Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Northern Ireland have voted by 57 to 24 to support an amendment that would repeal the region’s blasphemy and blasphemous libel laws. The amendment is now set to move forward through the legislative process, though it is not yet law. Northern Ireland Humanists have campaigned for years to remove these laws, arguing they restrict free speech.

Uganda

Freedom Centre Uganda, a grassroots humanist and human rights organization, has reached over 300 people through a critical thinking project. The initiative has strengthened critical thinking skills among teachers and students in secondary schools in Mbarara City through a combination of workshops, educational resource materials and an ongoing mentorship program.

United States

In Arkansas, a federal judge recently sided with humanists to rule that a Ten Commandments monument at the state Capitol was unconstitutional. This represents a major First Amendment victory for the American Humanist Association and its co-plaintiffs, including the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Arkansas Freethinkers. The ruling orders the monument’s removal, though that order is currently stayed pending appeal.

Peru

Humanist Signal was an eight-month digital broadcasting initiative designed to establish a reliable secular platform for discussing humanism, democracy and human rights within the Peruvian context. With support from Humanists International’s 2025 Digital Humanism Grant program, Humanist Signal was able to reach 10,000 people online, establish a robust network of experts and strengthened the secular movement in Peru.
