Prejudice (1970)

  • Date / 1970
  • Ratifying Body / Executive Committee
  • Status / Archived

The Amsterdam Declaration of the International Humanist & Ethical Union affirms that the fullest possible development of every human being is a matter of right, affirmed the dignity of man and the right of the individual to the greatest possible freedom of development compatible with the rights of others and advocated the world-wide application of scientific method to problems of human welfare.

The Executive Committee of the International Humanist & Ethical Union believes that advancement along these lines is seriously hampered by the artificial division of mankind into spuriously identified groups. This division is promoted by irrational and groundless beliefs and prejudices.

The Executive Committee of the International Humanist & Ethical Union recognises that the existence of prejudice presents a real human problem and that there is urgent need both for research into the causes of prejudice and for investigation of the ways by which prejudice may be reduced. Whilst supporting the investigations of international organisations such as the UN, UNESCO, and the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg into the cause of prejudice we call for an immediate expansion of such research both at a national and international level.

Remembering that the theme of the 1970 IHEU Congress was to “Seek a Humane World”, we pledge the support of the International Humanist & Ethical Union and of its member organisations to efforts to eradicate prejudice.
