Fraser Sutherland has been appointed as the new CEO of HSS, having formerly been the communications and campaigns manager.

The announcement came today as members of HSS meet in Edinburgh for their annual conference and AGM. He will take over Gordon MacRae, who leaves the organisation after four years. He is due to take a position in another Scottish charity.

Fraser takes over at an exciting time for HSS, after recent successes in a years-long campaign to remove the influence of unelected religious representatives in the countries education system, as well as extensive efforts to remove the ‘blasphemy’ laws which exist there.

Scotland is a world-leader in the provision of humanist ceremonies, and newly revealed statistics show that they celebrated more wedding ceremonies that any other faith or belief group.

Fraser Sutherland, new CEO of Humanist Society Scotland

Speaking about news of the announcement, Fraser Sutherland commented:

“I’m delighted to take on the role of Chief Executive and the new challenge that this presents. I am really proud to be part of an organisation which has made significant positive changes in Scottish public life and continues to be a strong voice for Humanism, human rights and equality.

“I particularly look forward to working with our friends both at Humanists International and their member organizations. Scotland as the birthplace of David Hume, Adam Smith and other Enlightenment figures has a long history of Humanist and rationalist outlook. I look forward to our organisation continuing to press for a fairer and more ethical society.”

Gary McLelland, CEO of Humanists International

Speaking at the conference in Edinburgh, Humanists International CEO, Gary McLelland, commented:

“I wish Fraser every success in his new role leading Humanist Society Scotland. It is an exciting time for the organisation, which has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of Gordon MacRae.

“Humanist Society Scotland is a world leader in the provision of meaningful humanist ceremonies, and has a lot of valuable skills and experiences to share with the rest of the world. I look forward to working with Fraser as he takes on this important role.”
