This initiative, supported by Humanists International’s 2023 Grants Program, aimed to instill a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability within student leadership entities. By its conclusion, the project impacted 88 individuals.
Kaheru Edgar, the IT Minister at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, expressed his commitment to practicing humanism values during his tenure. He highlighted how incorporating these principles facilitated inclusive decision-making processes and enhanced transparency within the student leadership body.
Rachel, a student leader at Bishop Stuart University, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of empathy and inclusivity in leadership. She noted how the project fostered collaboration among student leaders and promoted a conducive environment for diverse voices to be heard.
Reflecting on the success of the project, Twesigye Leonard, Youth Coordinator at Freedom Centre Uganda, expressed optimism about its sustainability. He highlighted plans to replicate the project in other educational institutions and communities, emphasizing the project’s role in promoting democratic leadership values beyond university campuses. With chapters formed within universities and growing interest from other organizations, the project is poised to continue empowering future leaders across Uganda.
