The WE-HER project aims to empower young women, girls, and youth
humanists across western and central Uganda to advance humanism, freedom of religion
or belief (FoRB), and sexual reproductive health and rights. It will conduct capacity-building
workshops for 39 participants to strengthen organizational governance, strategic planning,
and safeguarding policies across participating humanist groups. Additionally, the project
provides seed support to register a national women-led humanist organization and hosts
monthly participatory convenings as safe spaces to address FoRB violations.

Problem/Issue: Deeply embedded religious norms and a shrinking civic space create social
barriers for non-religious women while leaving women-led humanist organizations
underfunded and lacking institutional capacity.

No. of Beneficiaries: 39

Impact: The project will strengthen the governance and safeguarding policies of
participating groups, formally register Uganda’s first national women-led humanist entity,
and build capacity to identify and respond to local FoRB violations through monthly
convenings.
