The Faithless Hijabi Mental Health program is a global outreach initiative designed to provide specialized support for Ex-Muslims who have recently left their faith. Managed by organization president Zara Kay and a dedicated team, the project connects individuals with independent therapists and registered clinics in the UK and Lebanon who are trained in handling religious trauma and the specific challenges of “apostasy”. The program utilizes a remote therapy model via video conferencing to provide a safe, confidential environment for clients, many of whom reside in Muslim-majority countries where open dissent can lead to state persecution or social violence.

Problem/Issue:
The project addresses the critical gap in culturally sensitive, trauma-informed mental health support for Ex-Muslim humanists who face severe psychological distress, social isolation, and physical threats as a result of their transition away from religion.

No. of beneficiaries: 15

Impact:
The project provided 15 individuals with a safe, non-judgmental space to process religious trauma and navigate the “double life” often required in restrictive environments. Testimonials indicate that the program facilitated tangible clinical outcomes, such as reduced anxiety and depression, the implementation of mindfulness strategies, and successful transitions from perfectionism to healthier mindsets. Beyond psychological healing, the project offered stability to those facing family abandonment or living in conflict zones, and it successfully referred clients to psychiatrists when medical intervention was necessary. Although the grant budget is fully utilized, the initiative has proven its feasibility and will continue at a lower scale through ongoing fundraising and a new model encouraging partial contributions from those able to pay. This ongoing effort ensures that Ex-Muslims remain connected to a global support network that addresses their needs beyond just mental health.
