This project aims to get the Libyan humanist organization back on its feet by hiring people to help run the organization, rebuilding their website, and becoming officially recognized in Germany. They also want to speak out more about human rights issues in North Africa.
Problem/Issue:
In March 2022, the Libyan humanist organization was subjected to a fierce campaign by the Libyan government’s internal security apparatus. Their website was also destroyed and attacked, prompting members to hide.
No. of beneficiaries: 50
Impact:
The organization rebuilt itself and, thanks to its members’ efforts, secured the release of one imprisoned member. They are now documenting the member’s torture and interrogation through firsthand accounts.
The organization also held a mental health workshop for members suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. This workshop provided a safe space for emotional expression and marked a crucial first step in healing and recovery.
Finally, the organization resumed supporting individuals facing prosecution for non-religious beliefs or LGBTQ+ identity. They even aided two case assistants who fled to Germany by providing resettlement support to keep them safe from Libyan dangers. The organization has rebranded itself to “Humanists Libya”.
