Armed interference in Czechoslovakia (1968)

  • Date / 1968
  • Location / Czechoslovakia (former)
  • Ratifying Body / Board of Directors
  • Status / Archived

The Board of Directors of the International Humanist & Ethical Union expresses its great dismay at the armed interference of foreign troops in the internal affairs of Czechoslovakia.

This interference is in contravention of the Charter of the United Nations and the recognised norms of international law.

It is also, after the events in Czechoslovakia in 1948 and in Hungary in 1956, again on the part of the countries of the Warsaw Pact an infringement of the right of every nation to decide its own fate. This action reduces again for a long time the hope many people for a gradual improvement of the international relations. The Board of Directors of the International Humanist & Ethical Union urgently calls upon the governments in question to recognise the minimum requirements for personal freedom, which are at the root of every improvement of human society, and to withdraw the occupying forces from Czechoslovakia.
