Developing Human Rights Activities in Third World Countries

The International Humanist and Ethical Union: Having regard for inherent human dignity and the inalienable rights of all people as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Noting that humanist rights are especially prone to violation in Third World countries, Considering the urgent need to develop IHEU activities in the Third World and to contribute to the growth of humanist ideals on a worldwide basis,
Recognising that the question of human rights is closely linked with the economic plight of many developing countries suffering by the perpetuation of the North-South divide and the inability to repay international debts,
Gravely concerned inter alia with appalling manifestations of religious intolerance, discrimination of women, abuse of children and the continuing disregard for fundamental international norms, especially those violating the individual’s right to self-determination, belief, and a non-theistic life stance,
Reiterating its resolve to continue to sincerely and energetically promote the protection of humanist rights the world over,
Welcomes the Development Programme, prepared by the IHEU Human Rights Project, and the efforts made to improve the human rights situation in Third World countries,
Urges all IHEU Member Organisations and Individual Members to continue in all sincerity and determination in promoting and protecting humanist rights,
Resolves to give full moral and financial support to the efforts of the IHEU Human Rights Project,
Requests all Member Organisations and Individual Member to intensify fundraising efforts on behalf of the IHEU Human Rights Project.
