Human rights (1988)

The International Humanist & Ethical Union,

Having regard for inherent human dignity and the inalienable rights of all peoples as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;

Noting that 1988 is the 40th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration, a widely accepted international standard with regard to human rights and duties; Considering the importance of the input of Non-Governmental Organisations to international human rights bodies as well as the indispensable role they play in maintaining pressure on Governments to uphold human rights and in focussing public attention on the promotion and protection of fundamental rights; Gravely concerned inter alia at continuing massive violations of human rights and disregard for international human rights norms, especially those violating the individual’s right to self-determination, choice or belief, philosophy and way of life;

Reiterating its resolve to continue, sincerely and energetically, to promote the protection of Humanist rights;

Welcomes every effort leading to an improvement of the human rights situation through an increase in public awareness of human rights issues, thereby deepening the understanding and knowledge of international human rights instruments;

Strongly supports United Nations General Assembly resolution on the idea of launching a World Public Information Campaign on Human Rights;

Urges all governments that have not yet done so speedily to sign and ratify all international instruments in the field of human rights and duties;

Calls on Governments to undertake their responsibilities with determination and vigour so as to assure to all human beings the promise of equal and inalienable rights – the only guarantee to freedom, justice and peace in the world.
