One of the main goals of the International Humanist & Ethical Union is the attempt to establish an honest and peaceful world.

Whereas in 1990 we were hopeful to reach this goal within a shorter period than expected, the developments in 1991 (Gulf War) and 1992 (Chaos in the Commonwealth of Independent States and in the Balkans) are cause for great concern.

Whatever one’s race, ethnic background, life-stance or abode, everybody has the right to enjoy (a number of) fundamental political, social and cultural human rights. It is the government’s duty to guarantee these rights for each citizen. This is not a simple task, but this programme must be defended everywhere and always against nationalists, racists and ethnic and religious fundamentalists.

Therefore we do not believe in a forced development of ethnically homogeneous territories. The consequences of such a development can be seen in the Balkans and particularly in Yugoslavia.

We support the efforts of the United Nations to end the civil war and we call on all countries in Europe to take in as many refugees as possible and to help them in returning home as soon as possible.
