With support from Humanists International’s 2025 Digital Humanism Grant program, Humanist Signal was able to reach 10,000 people online, establish a robust network of experts and strengthened the secular movement in Peru.

In Peru, mainstream media often overlooks the perspectives of the secular community and the specific human rights challenges faced by marginalized groups. There is a notable lack of representation for atheist families and a shortage of safe platforms for victims of state violence to share their testimonies without censorship.

Humanist Signal was an eight-month digital broadcasting initiative designed to establish a reliable secular platform for discussing humanism, democracy and human rights within the Peruvian context.

Led by Project Manager Adrián Núñez, the Peruvian Association of Atheists produced weekly episodes streamed via Facebook and YouTube, bridging the gap between secular activism and civic engagement.

The initiative provided a vital counter-narrative and a safe platform for marginalized voices, most notably through an interview with Milagros Samillán, who spoke about the harassment she has faced while seeking justice for her late brother, Marco Antonio Samillán.

Marco, a doctor, was killed in Juliaca while assisting the injured during the repression of protests against the government of Dina Boluarte between 2022 and 2023. In the episode, Milagros shared her brother’s story and reflected on the ongoing struggle for justice among affected families.

Humanist Signal also facilitated direct interaction between citizens and politicians, including an interview with a presidential candidate. By reaching a substantial online audience the project strengthened the secular movement in Peru and proved the effectiveness of digital humanism in fostering community support.

Humanists International has now announced the recipients of its 2026 Grants Program. The Grants Program is open exclusively to Members and Associates of Humanists International, and we encourage humanist organizations interested in joining to learn more about becoming a Member.
