Books ‘n Wheels was a mobile educational initiative designed to bring humanist values, critical thinking and empathy to children in underserved communities through a portable reading room.

As a recipient of Humanists International’s 2025 Young Humanist Grant, Humanist Alliance Philippines, International (HAPI) delivered the project to 60 children and 20 parents across multiple communities, while also reaching more than 400 people online.

According to HAPI, critical thinking, humanism and secularism are often overlooked in early childhood education in the Philippines. As a result, many children lack opportunities to explore diverse perspectives and develop the skills needed to think independently and engage respectfully with people of different beliefs.

Using a specially equipped vehicle, the Books ‘n Wheels team travelled between communities, hosting interactive storytelling sessions and activities focused on empathy, ethics, critical thinking and secular values. The project created a safe and welcoming space where children could discuss complex ideas and learn how humanist principles can be applied in everyday life.

The initiative successfully fostered a practical understanding of humanist values among participants. Through storytelling, discussions and reflective activities, children developed a stronger sense of social responsibility and a greater appreciation of helping others based on shared humanity, rather than adherence to religious doctrine.

When asked what they would do if they found a wallet on the road while its owner was still nearby, one child responded: “I would give it back to them. It’s not my money, and even if I needed it, I would still return it because they might need it more.”

Many of the children were able to provide real world examples of ethical behavior, showing an understanding of what the project described as “domino effect” kindness, where good actions inspire others to act compassionately.

Beyond teaching individual ethics, Books ‘n Wheels helped strengthen community bonds among both children and parents. By encouraging dialogue, tolerance and shared humanity, the initiative addressed an important educational gap and promoted a more inclusive and compassionate culture within local communities.
