About: Hosted by Humanists International’s Advocacy Team, this interactive webinar will focus on the normative legal framework of freedom of expression – including the ways the right can and cannot be limited – and how it relates to the right to freedom of religion or belief. From there, the discussion will turn to identifying hate speech and incitement, the legal framework around it, and ways to tackle hate.

Aim: To increase understanding of the legal norms of FoE and FoRB and of responses to hate speech.

Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will:

  1. better understand the right to freedom of expression and its limitations;
  2. better understand the relationship between free expression and freedom of religion or belief;
  3. be able to identify hate speech;
  4. be able to list a range of legal and non-legal responses to hate speech.

Presenters:

Elizabeth O’Casey, Director of Advocacy of Humanists International

Elizabeth manages Humanists International’s advocacy work. She also designs and gives human rights and advocacy training sessions for a variety of stakeholders including politicians, diplomats, officials and UN experts. Content wise, her work focuses on the promotion of human rights and equality, particularly in areas and spaces targeted by anti-rights initiatives. In practice this means her work centres around gender justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights, LGBTI+ equality, freedom of religion or belief, cultural rights, and countering intolerance and discriminatory narratives. Leon Langdon, Advocacy Officer of Humanists International
Leon joined Humanists International as an Advocacy Officer in September 2023. He supports our work at the United Nations Human Rights Council, as well as our broader advocacy work. Leon also supports members in their engagement with UN human rights instruments, helping them to make submissions and statements as part of the Universal Periodic Review process.
